Recreational gymnastics program

Westside offers recreational gymnastics classes for boys and girls ages 18 months and up. Students who are experienced gymnasts age 6+ can participate in the accelerated gymnastics program. Students are required to attend a certain number of practices a week, based on their level.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Girls

Crawlers & Cruisers This class requires parent participation and is designed for the parent and child to take class together in a fun environment. Come and have fun with your little one! The first portion of class will focus on learning and practicing games/exercises that foster healthy growth and development. The second portion of class will be for open play to encourage exploring, discovering and parent/child bonding.
Parent Child  This class requires parent participation and is designed for the parent and child to take class together in a fun environment. Class will focus on locomotor skills, hand-eye coordination and basic skills on all apparatus.
Gym Minis (3-4yrs)
First class flying solo (without parents). This class will work on strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, basic shapes and body awareness.  Students will gain an understanding of class structure, moving through circuits, following directions and taking turns.  Students will also learn pre-basic gymnastic skills and age appropriate gymnastics terminology.
Gym Minis (4-5yrs) Motor skills are more refined and children learn basic gymnastics skills.  Cartwheels, rolls, handstands as well as more difficult strength, flexibility and balance drills.
Advanced Gym Minis classes are teacher placement accelerated classes for the younger gymnast.  These classes will focus on building a solid foundation of core strength, flexibility, shaping and basic skills necessary for advanced gymnastics.
Levels 1-4 Level 1–3 gymnasts are taught beginning through advanced skills on all four Olympic events (bars, beam, floor and vault) in addition to trampoline and Tumble Track. Skills are taught in a safe and progressive manner. Level 3 and 4 classes include more advanced tumbling and dance skills. This class progresses into the Xcel program once required skills are met.

Boys

Levels 1-3 Gymnasts are taught beginning skills on all six Olympic events (vault, parallel bars, high bar, floor, pommel horse and rings).

Tumbling

Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of tumbling, to include and progress through handstands, cartwheels, round-offs, standing back handsprings, round-off back handsprings, and multiple whips, flips and twists. We utilize the competition spring floor, air track and other various training aids and mats to ensure proper progressions and attention to safety.
Beginning Requirements None needed - all beginning students are welcome
Intermediate Requirements Students must have a strong cartwheel, handstand, roundoff, working kick overs and walkovers
Advanced Requirements Students must have front and back walkovers
Elite Requirements Students must have a consistent, strong round off back handspring - this is a great additional class for students in Elite Acro, Xcel Gymnastics and those working on advancing their tumbling for cheerleading.

DRESS CODE

Attire for girls – any color or printed leotard. Gymnastic shorts/leggings are optional. No tights, skirts, or jeans.  No two piece sets - midriff must be covered. 
Attire for boys – elastic waist gym shorts/pants, fitted T-Shirt or tank top. Avoid items with zippers, buttons or snaps. No jeans.
Hair for all genders - long hair should be pulled back in a ponytail, braid or bun. Avoid short hair from falling into the face during class either with a half pony, hair clips or a soft headband.
NO jewelry - with the exception of medical alert jewelry and stud earrings, all jewelry should remain at home. The following items are a safety hazard during gymnastics: hoop/dangly earrings, necklaces, chokers, bracelets, rings, anklets, wrist bands, fit bits, watches of any kind, etc. Students will be asked to remove any of these items before participating in class.
Winter layers - extra items may be worn for warmth during the cooler months. They should be worn over the basic class attire and not in lieu of. They should be form fitted to the body and not baggy/loose.
